Environmental benefits of recycling plastic
The environment is spared 2.4 kg of CO2 emissions per kilogram of plastic that is recycled instead of being burned.
Therefore, more plastic must be recycled now!

Denmark has traditionally burned much of our plastic in incinerators. Right now there are several stakeholders who wish to see less plastic incinerated and more recycled. A large proportion of our waste plastic is exported to low-wage countries for both sorting, reprocessing and incineration.

In the long-term, none of the above solutions are sustainable because the resources are wasted instead of entering into a cycle. The circular approach will be a central theme when the EU Commission launches a new package for a circular economy in 2015/16. The package will include reviews of a large number of regulations related to design, waste management and recycling. In addition to the resources having to remain in a cycle, it must also be economically advantageous to recycle plastic, use recycled plastic or to design products so as to make them easier to recycle.

Denmark has also prioritised recycling and the circular economy by developing a resource strategy at the end of 2013 and a waste prevention strategy in April 2015. As part of these plans, a wide range of partnerships and value chain collaborations have been established, focusing on increasing the level of recycling of plastics in Denmark.”
