ENVIRONMENT

In Denmark we have tended to burn a lot of our plastic waste at our incineration plants. Another large portion of our plastic waste is exported to low-wage countries for sorting, reprocessing and incineration. None of these solutions are sustainable in the long term because resources are going to waste, rather than being recycled and reused.

There is now an increasing determination to burn less and recycle more. There is enormous potential in the circular way of thinking, which accounts for why circular economics, resource efficiency, sustainable consumption and production have appeared on the European agenda in recent years.

In December 2015, the EU Commission presented a circular economy package with concrete initiatives for promoting the transition to a more sustainable EU by 2030. The package consists of an action plan for the circular economy as well as proposals for amendments to six waste directives.

The aim of the package is to contribute to growth, job creation, security of supply and environmental improvements in Europe by reducing waste generation and increasing recycling and resource efficiency. The action plan covers the entire “product circle” and puts in motion initiatives, for example, in product design, production and waste management.

The Commission has previously estimated that increased resource efficiency throughout the value chain could reduce material consumption by 17-24 percent in 2030 and generate savings for European industry of EUR 30 billion.

AVL basically pursues an environmental policy aimed at maintaining and increasing employees’, suppliers’, customers’ and other stakeholders’ trust and belief that AVL has an environmental policy that positively affects the environment more than the law prescribes:

  • AVL conducts its own activities with the least possible impact on the environment and with the least use of resources (raw materials, ancillary materials, water and energy)
  • AVL wishes to continuously reduce its own environmental impact
  • AVL wishes to do better than merely comply with applicable environmental legislation and other legal requirements for the company

We gladly take part in the consultancy to “find the gold in your plastic waste” by jointly figuring out the most optimal sorting of the plastic so that it achieves the highest possible value.
