Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS)

ABS plastic is a hard, glossy type of plastic

ABS belongs to the amorphous thermoplastic types. ABS is based on acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene.

ABS combines the strength and stiffness in acrylonitrile and styrene with the toughness in butadiene rubber. Excellent hardness, gloss, toughness and electrical insulation outweigh the costs of producing ABS, which is relatively high compared to other polymers.

Injection moulding, extrusion, blow moulding and vacuum moulding are widely used processing methods.

Applications of ABS-plastic

  • Cabinets for home appliances, phones and computers
  • Equipment for cars
  • LEGO bricks
  • Toys
  • ABS is less weather resistant since it is degraded by sunlight and is therefore not suitable for outdoor use
